The Abia State Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday in Umuahia called on residents of the state to vote against the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general elections, warning against what it described as a return to poor governance.
The call was made by the state PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman, Ikpegbu Emeka-Yellow, during a press conference where party leaders addressed political developments ahead of the next election cycle.
He said supporting the APC in Abia would mean accepting hardship and a lack of progress, adding that the party should not be allowed to gain control in the state. According to him, many individuals now backing the APC were previously involved in leadership that did not bring growth to Abia, and were only trying to present themselves differently under a new platform.
He stated that the state deserved leadership that focuses on development and accountability, noting that the people should not allow a return to past challenges. He added that Abia had moved forward and should not reverse its progress.
The PDP leader also urged political actors across different parties in the state to put aside personal interests and work together to protect democratic values, describing the 2027 election as important for the future of both the state and the country.
He further called on opposition groups in Abia to cooperate and resist any attempt by the APC to gain control through unfair political means, warning that such moves could affect the stability of the state’s political environment.
Emeka-Yellow encouraged party members to remain united and support the current leadership structure, saying the PDP was prepared for the next election and ready to present credible candidates.
He also extended his message to Nigerians, urging them to reject the APC at the national level, blaming the ruling party for economic challenges, rising insecurity, and declining public trust in government institutions.
According to him, many citizens are struggling to meet basic needs due to rising prices, job losses, and business closures, while security challenges such as banditry, kidnapping, and violence continue to affect different parts of the country.
He added that there were concerns about the state of democratic institutions, alleging that governance had shifted away from addressing the real needs of citizens.
The party maintained that voters in Abia should remain alert and make decisions that would protect the state’s progress as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
