The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday in Abuja criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his comments on the current administration and also assured residents that major road projects in the capital would be completed before the end of May.
Wike spoke during an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects across the FCT, where he reacted to Atiku’s claim that the present government has not delivered positive results for Nigerians.
He described Atiku as a frequent presidential contender who has not succeeded in past elections, adding that his political moves may continue into future election cycles. He said Nigerians would not take such criticism seriously, pointing to ongoing development works within the FCT as evidence of progress.
The minister urged a comparison between Abuja during Atiku’s time in office as Vice President and the current state of infrastructure, insisting that there have been visible changes in the capital city.
He said his administration would remain focused on project delivery and would not allow political debates to affect ongoing work, stressing that contractors are expected to meet deadlines regardless of the election season.
Wike disclosed that the Airport to Kuje road project is close to completion, with part of a bridge expected to be opened soon, while the entire project is scheduled for delivery before the end of May. He also said the first phase of the Kuje to Gwagwalada road dualisation, covering about seven kilometres, would be ready within the same timeframe.
He added that these projects would improve movement between satellite towns and the city centre, reduce congestion, and attract more residents and investors to developing areas like Kuje.
The minister also denied claims by the African Democratic Congress that the FCT Administration interfered with its convention plans, stating that there was no involvement from his office and that due process was not followed by the party.
He assured residents that infrastructure development remains the priority of the administration, adding that a large portion of ongoing projects is expected to be completed before the end of the year as efforts continue to improve living conditions in the capital.
