The Peoples Democratic Party has said it will take part fully in the 2027 general elections despite the leadership crisis affecting the party. The assurance came on Sunday as party chieftain Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa spoke on the party’s future and efforts to remain active ahead of the next polls.
He said the party is working to recover from years of internal disputes, factional struggles and leadership problems that have weakened its structure since 2022. According to him, despite the challenges, the PDP is not backing away from the electoral process and remains committed to fielding candidates in the coming elections.
Ohuabunwa explained that while the leadership dispute is still before the courts, the party is relying on existing legal recognition already granted to one leadership structure by the Appeal Court.
He said that structure is expected to continue preparations for the 2027 elections while waiting for the Supreme Court to make a final decision on the matter.
He said the party cannot allow its internal troubles to destroy its chances ahead of the polls and is taking steps to rebuild and stay united. According to him, efforts are ongoing to restore order and strengthen the opposition party after months of uncertainty over control of its affairs.
The PDP chieftain also said the unresolved leadership matter should not stop the party from functioning politically. He maintained that preparations for elections must continue even as the legal process runs its course, adding that the party still has a role to play in Nigeria’s political space.
His comments come amid growing talks around alliances, realignments and early political moves ahead of the 2027 elections. While other parties have begun consultations and positioning, the PDP appears focused on settling internal issues while keeping its electoral plans on track.
The party has faced pressure in recent years due to divisions among members, competing interests and repeated disputes over direction and leadership. Still, party figures believe the PDP can recover and remain a strong force before the next general election.
With the Supreme Court yet to decide on the leadership issue, attention is now on how the party manages its internal crisis while preparing for primaries and wider election activities. For now, the message from the party is that the PDP intends to stay in the race for 2027 regardless of its factional challenges.
