On Wednesday in Nigeria, activist Aisha Yesufu resigned from the African Democratic Congress and moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress as she announced her plan to contest for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, explaining that her decision followed her political direction and support for Peter Obi.
Yesufu made her decision known through a message shared on her social media page, where she explained that her move came after a deeper reflection on the country’s future and her continued alignment with Obi’s leadership and vision.
She said her earlier support for Obi influenced her decision to join the African Democratic Congress, and her latest move to the Nigeria Democratic Congress is a continuation of that position.
She also made it clear that her new step is not just about joining another party, but also about contesting for a seat in the Senate to represent the Federal Capital Territory under her new platform. She noted that she had fully completed her responsibilities in the African Democratic Congress before leaving, describing her exit as smooth and orderly.
Yesufu recalled her time in the ADC, where she served in different roles, including positions at committee level, and expressed appreciation for the people she worked with during that period. She said the experience added to her political journey and thanked members of the party for their cooperation.
Her defection comes at a time when opposition politics in Nigeria is seeing changes, with movements involving key figures such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Obi, who recently joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, leading to more shifts from the African Democratic Congress into the new platform.
