Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso on Saturday in Abuja supported the decision of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, to reserve its 2027 presidential ticket for Southern Nigeria, saying the arrangement follows the party’s agreement on power rotation and fairness among regions.
Kwankwaso spoke during the party’s national convention attended by delegates, party leaders and supporters from different parts of the country. The gathering focused on plans ahead of the 2027 general election and discussions on the party’s leadership structure and zoning formula.
The former governor urged party members and supporters to begin mobilisation efforts and participate fully in activities leading to the next election. His support came shortly after the party officially adopted a resolution backing a Southern candidate for a single four-year term in 2027.
The decision was approved during the convention after members considered a motion presented before party delegates. NDC National Chairman Moses Cleopas later explained that the arrangement was part of efforts to maintain balance within the opposition coalition and ensure equal participation among regions.
According to the party’s plan, the presidential ticket is expected to return to Northern Nigeria in 2031 after the completion of the South’s tenure. Members of the party’s National Executive Committee also confirmed the election of new National Working Committee officials during the convention.
The zoning arrangement is expected to improve the chances of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and other politicians from the South who may seek the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the primary election.
The latest development comes as opposition politicians continue consultations and alliances ahead of the 2027 polls in an attempt to build a stronger coalition against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Meanwhile, Obi and Kwankwaso recently became members of the NDC during a meeting in Abuja where they called on party members to avoid internal conflicts and work together towards national development.
Obi explained that his decision to join the party was influenced by the need for a political platform free from internal disputes and instability.
