On Sunday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Congress released the outcome of its screening exercise for House of Assembly aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections, clearing some candidates while disqualifying others based on party rules and documentation issues.
The party announced that 33 aspirants were approved to take part in its primaries, while 65 others were not cleared to continue. A major part of the outcome showed that all 32 aspirants linked to Governor Siminalayi Fubara did not make it through the screening process.
At the same time, many sitting lawmakers and other aspirants believed to be loyal to the camp of former governor and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike were cleared to contest.
The screening report explained that some aspirants were dropped for several reasons, including issues with party membership status, incomplete or questionable documents, failure to meet financial obligations within the party, and inconsistencies in personal details submitted during the process.
Other cases involved problems with voter identification, nomination procedures, and supporting affidavits that did not meet required standards.
The party also directed all aspirants who took part in the exercise to check the official notice board at its state secretariat in Port Harcourt to confirm their status. It added that anyone who wants to challenge the outcome can submit an appeal through the same office, with a hearing scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
The development has further increased attention on the internal political divisions within the Rivers APC structure as different groups prepare for the party primaries leading to the 2027 elections.
