Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has secured victory in the All Progressives Congress primary election for the Kogi Central Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections. The exercise took place on Monday as party members gathered to choose their candidate for the Senate race.
Bello defeated two other aspirants in the contest. The other contenders were the APC Diaspora Secretary, Momoh Obaro, and Ibrahim Yakubu Adoke. The primary ended with Bello emerging as the party’s preferred candidate for the senatorial seat.
The outcome came after days of uncertainty within the party over Bello’s participation in the race. There had been rumours in political circles suggesting that issues linked to his screening process could affect his eligibility for the primary election. The reports created tension among supporters and party members in the state before the exercise was eventually conducted.
Despite the speculation, Bello took part in the primary and won the contest against the other aspirants. His victory now places him in line to represent the APC in the Kogi Central Senatorial election during the 2027 polls.
The former governor remains a major figure in Kogi politics, having served as governor of the state for two terms before leaving office. His decision to contest for the Senate seat has continued to attract attention from political observers and party loyalists across the state.
