On Sunday, May 31, 2026, in Lagos State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) announced Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 governorship election, pairing her with the party’s governorship flag bearer, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.
The announcement formally places Sonayon-James on the APC ticket as the party begins preparations for the next governorship contest in Lagos. A native of Badagry, she joins Hamzat in what the party hopes will be a strong ticket ahead of the election.
Sonayon-James is a long-time member of the APC and currently serves as the party’s Deputy State Chairman in Lagos. Before attaining that position, she worked as the State Assistant Woman Leader and was involved in various party activities across the state.
Over the years, she has built a reputation through grassroots political engagement and her support for greater participation of women in leadership and public service. Her political experience also includes serving as Supervisory Councillor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West Local Council Development Area.
Beyond politics, Sonayon-James has worked in the private sector in areas such as human resources, logistics and sustainability management. She is also the Chief Executive Officer of DGS Chauffeurs and Logistics.
Academically, she holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology and a degree in Business and Human Resources Management from the University of Hull in the United Kingdom.
Her emergence as deputy governorship candidate marks another step in the APC’s preparations for the 2027 Lagos governorship election. Party leaders are expected to continue consultations and mobilisation efforts as the campaign season approaches.
With Hamzat and Sonayon-James now confirmed as the party’s candidates, the APC will seek to maintain its hold on Lagos State when voters head to the polls in 2027.
