The Labour Party on Thursday confirmed Dr. Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election during a National Executive Committee meeting held at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting, attended physically and virtually by party leaders and stakeholders, also witnessed the unveiling of a new political vision tagged “Believe Again,” which is built around a Nigerians-first approach to governance.
Following his ratification, Okereke pledged to work towards restoring public confidence in government and rebuilding institutions across the country. He said the Labour Party remains committed to serving workers, farmers, professionals, artisans, women, young people, persons living with disabilities and other citizens seeking better governance.
The presidential candidate described the “Believe Again” vision as a response to growing public frustration with the state of the nation. According to him, many Nigerians have lost faith in public institutions and the possibility of a brighter future. He maintained that the country’s greatest strength lies in its people and that governance should focus on creating opportunities that improve their lives.
As part of his agenda, Okereke unveiled a five-point plan aimed at tackling major national challenges. The programme focuses on security and national unity, economic recovery and food production, education and healthcare development, institutional reforms, and national cohesion.
On security, he proposed closer cooperation between communities and security agencies, alongside the modernisation of the armed forces and other law enforcement bodies. He also promised measures aimed at improving safety across the country and strengthening national unity.
In the area of the economy, Okereke said his administration would seek to remove obstacles slowing investment and business growth. He identified issues such as inadequate power supply, poor infrastructure, policy inconsistencies and regulatory challenges as factors affecting economic progress. He also advocated greater collaboration between the federal and state governments and proposed reforms to improve electricity generation and distribution.
The Labour Party candidate further outlined plans for education and healthcare. He promised increased investment in basic education, technical training, digital skills and research. In healthcare, he said efforts would be directed toward expanding access to quality medical services and improving the overall health system.
Okereke also proposed institutional reforms designed to improve public administration. His plans include adopting zero-based budgeting, expanding digital government services, strengthening accountability mechanisms and promoting recruitment based on merit.
He added that some responsibilities, including basic education and primary healthcare services, should be managed more directly at the local government level. He also suggested making participation in the National Youth Service Corps optional for many graduates, except those in selected professional fields.
As part of efforts to promote unity, the Labour Party flag-bearer proposed the introduction of a National Day of Peace and Forgiveness aimed at encouraging reconciliation among Nigerians from different ethnic, religious and social backgrounds.
During his address, Okereke acknowledged the contributions of Labour Party leaders, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman, members of the National Working Committee, labour unions and supporters within and outside Nigeria.
He said a Labour Party administration would focus on governance, public service and national development, adding that the party intends to offer Nigerians an alternative vision ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
