The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Borno State has decided not to participate in the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2025. The party cited lack of trust in the state’s electoral body and the high cost of nomination and expression of interest forms as the main reasons for its withdrawal.

The decision was reached during a recent State Executive Committee meeting in Maiduguri. The PDP raised concerns that the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC) had not provided enough assurance of credible and fair elections. Party officials also noted that the electoral body had failed to consider the economic difficulties faced by candidates, making the costs of participation burdensome.

Another issue highlighted by the PDP was the structure of the electoral bill. The party argued that the current bill allows councilor election results to be announced at higher levels rather than at the ward level, and chairmanship results at the local government headquarters, making the process vulnerable to manipulation. They suggested that this arrangement favors the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and could lead to electoral misconduct.

In contrast, the APC has expressed readiness to participate in the elections. The party’s state chairman, Bello Ayuba, said the APC had formally informed BOSIEC of its participation and notified all wards and supporters of their plans. The party has been preparing for the elections in accordance with existing procedures.
The PDP’s withdrawal reflects growing tensions between opposition parties and the electoral authority in Borno State, raising questions about the transparency and fairness of the upcoming local government polls.
