The African Action Congress (AAC) in Oyo State has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to clarify how relief funds for victims of the Bodija explosion in Ibadan were handled. The party raised concerns after reports indicated that only ₦4.5 billion was approved for compensation, despite claims that the federal government had provided ₦50 billion for the disaster.
The explosion, which occurred on January 16, 2024, destroyed homes, caused multiple deaths, and left hundreds of residents displaced in the Old Bodija area. The AAC questioned the state government about the whereabouts of the remaining funds reportedly released by the federal government.
The party accused the Oyo State administration of lacking transparency and called for a detailed explanation of how the approved funds were distributed to affected families. Officials said the ₦4.5 billion was intended to help resettle victims and rebuild damaged properties, but the gap between the state-approved amount and the alleged federal support raised doubts.
Authorities have not provided a full account of the federal support or how it was allocated. The AAC maintains that citizens deserve a clear response about the total funds received and the measures taken to support the victims. Residents and political observers continue to demand accountability as questions linger over the management of the disaster relief.
