Abubakar Malami, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, along with his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and a staff of Ramadiya Property Limited, Hajia Bashir Asabe, are set to appear in the Federal High Court in Abuja to seek bail in a N9 billion corruption case. The defendants are currently held at Kuje Prison and are facing 16-count money laundering charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on behalf of the federal government.
The court had previously rejected an oral bail application and directed the parties to submit written arguments. The bail hearing comes after the trio pleaded not guilty to all the charges during their arraignment. The former AGF and his co-defendants are expected to present arguments to the court while the EFCC challenges their release, citing factors under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act that must be considered before bail is granted.
The case continues amid scrutiny over the legality and complexity of the charges, with the defense arguing that money laundering is a bailable offense and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Today’s proceedings are expected to determine whether the court will grant bail or maintain custody as the trial moves forward.
