ALDRAP disclosed that it has written to the Chairman of INEC, requesting certified true copies of the voters’ registers for all state constituencies in Rivers State. According to the group, many of its members are registered voters in those constituencies and are therefore legally allowed to begin recall proceedings against their representatives.
The lawyers explained that the impeachment action by the lawmakers goes against a February 2025 Supreme Court judgment, which advised the Rivers State House of Assembly and the governor to resolve disputes through peaceful and friendly means. They also noted that both the governor and the lawmakers belong to the same political party, the All Progressives Congress, and should have used internal party mechanisms to settle disagreements.
ALDRAP warned that it would approach the court if INEC fails to release the requested voters’ registers. The association said access to the documents is necessary to allow constituents exercise their constitutional right to recall lawmakers who no longer represent their interests.
The group also faulted the impeachment notice itself, describing it as invalid. According to ALDRAP, the notice contains basic errors and lacks the approval of Rivers State constituents, making the process unacceptable from both legal and public standpoints.
The development adds to the growing political tension in Rivers State following the move by the House of Assembly to begin impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.
