Abuja pastor kneels, begs Wike over Jabi Lake land

The Senior Pastor of Family Worship Centre in Abuja, Sarah Omakwu, on Sunday publicly appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, not to allocate the Jabi Lake recreation area for private development, saying the space should remain open for public use in the interest of residents.

The appeal was made through a video shared online where the cleric was seen kneeling while addressing the minister. She explained that her action was a personal plea, as she chose to appeal respectfully rather than confront the authorities over the issue.

Omakwu described the Jabi Lake area as a common space used daily by residents for exercise, relaxation, and social gatherings. She said the location serves as a meeting point for different groups, including young people, and plays a role in community life within the city.

She also raised concern about the steady reduction of public spaces in Abuja, noting that access to some areas has become limited over time. According to her, keeping places like Jabi Lake open is important for the well-being of residents.

While making the appeal, she also acknowledged ongoing development projects in the Federal Capital Territory under Wike, especially road construction, which she said has improved movement within the city.

Her request comes after plans by the Federal Capital Territory Administration to partner with private firms to redevelop the Jabi Lake area into a tourism and recreation centre. The project is expected to boost business activities and attract visitors to the capital.

Officials had earlier stated that the plan is part of efforts to improve Abuja’s appeal as a destination for leisure and investment. However, the proposal has drawn reactions from some residents who want the area preserved as a public space accessible to all.
