2027: Amaechi renews call for opposition unity after PDP delegation visit

African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has called on opposition political parties to work together ahead of the 2027 general election. He made the appeal on Thursday while receiving a delegation from a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, who visited him to condole with his family over the death of his mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Amaechi.

Amaechi said opposition parties must put aside their political differences and build a united front if they hope to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election. According to him, cooperation among opposition groups is necessary because a divided opposition would find it difficult to present a strong challenge at the polls.

He urged political leaders to place the interest of the country above personal ambitions as preparations for the 2027 elections continue. Amaechi maintained that unity among opposition parties would improve their chances of offering Nigerians a credible alternative.

During the visit, Amaechi also reflected on the life of his late mother. He described her as a strong influence in his upbringing, saying her commitment and sacrifices played an important role in shaping his life and career.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Turaki expressed sympathy to Amaechi and his family over the loss of their matriarch. He acknowledged the pain of losing a mother and prayed that the family would find strength during the period of mourning.

Turaki also recalled Amaechi’s political journey in the PDP, noting that he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and later as governor on the party’s platform. He said members of the delegation shared in the family’s grief and offered their support as Amaechi mourns his mother.

The condolence visit also provided an opportunity for discussions on national politics, with Amaechi renewing his call for closer cooperation among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
