The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will intensify political pressure on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the statement on Friday in Abuja while speaking with journalists during an inspection of ongoing projects across the Federal Capital Territory.
The minister said the political opposition in Nigeria remained too divided to be described as a single leading force ahead of the next general election.
He pointed to the internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, saying the party had lost the strength and unity required to function as the country’s main opposition platform.
Wike said the current political situation had left several opposition politicians struggling to maintain their relevance as the 2027 elections approach.
The FCT minister also dismissed concerns about how opposition politicians might react to his political activities, saying their views would not affect his approach to the coming election.
He made it clear that his political objective was not to help opposition parties become stronger, but to work toward the success of his own political camp.
Wike said he expected the opposition to face more difficulties before the 2027 polls, adding that he intended to make the political contest more challenging for his opponents.
His comments come amid growing political movements ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Atiku and other opposition figures working to build a strong platform capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu.
The minister has repeatedly questioned the ability of the opposition to form a united political force, particularly because of the prolonged crisis within the PDP.
The latest statement further reflects the growing political tension between Wike and several opposition figures as parties begin positioning themselves for the next general elections.
Wike also maintained that the political developments taking place across the country would continue to reshape the strength of different parties before Nigerians head to the polls in 2027.
