Anambra is among the eight Nigerian states—alongside Bayelsa, Kogi, Imo, Osun, Ondo, Edo, and Ekiti—where gubernatorial elections take place outside the general election cycle. The state’s participation in off-cycle elections began in 2003, following a court decision that nullified the victory of Chris Ngige of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and declared Peter Obi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) the rightful winner after a two-year legal battle at the Court of Appeal in Enugu.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, reaffirmed the commission’s preparedness for the exercise, stating that 24,000 personnel have been deployed to ensure smooth conduct of the polls. According to him, voting will take place in 5,718 polling units out of the total 5,720, as two polling units will be excluded due to lack of registered voters.

The election is expected to be closely contested, with Governor Soludo of APGA regarded as one of the top contenders. The electoral body has urged voters to conduct themselves peacefully and cooperate with officials during the voting process.

Updates and official results from the governorship election are expected to be released as counting begins later today across the 21 local government areas of Anambra State.
