President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to strengthen Nigeria’s security framework by ensuring that operatives of the proposed state police are properly armed to confront terrorists and bandits across the country. He made this known during the All Progressives Congress National Executive Committee meeting held on Friday in Abuja.
The president also disclosed that the federal government intends to establish forest rangers who will be deployed to secure forests and remote areas often used by criminal groups as hideouts. According to him, these rangers will also be equipped to carry out their duties effectively as part of efforts to end terrorism and banditry.
Tinubu’s statement comes amid growing concerns over killings, kidnappings and attacks linked to armed groups in different parts of Nigeria. In response to the worsening situation, the president reaffirmed his commitment to introducing state-controlled policing structures that can respond faster to local security threats.
While some Nigerians and political actors have raised concerns about possible misuse of state police by governors, the idea has gained increasing support. The National Assembly has publicly shown readiness to back the creation of state police as part of broader constitutional and security reforms.
The president assured party leaders that his administration remains determined to defeat criminal elements and restore safety nationwide. He stressed that the combination of armed state police and forest rangers would strengthen local security and help bring lasting peace to affected communities.
