Former Minister of Defence and senior figure in the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr Bello Haliru Mohammed, has announced that he is leaving the PDP and withdrawing from active politics after more than 40 years in public service. He made this known in a letter dated November 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman of Nassarawa Ward 1 in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. The letter was also sent to the PDP state chairman, the national chairman of the party, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The development became public on Monday.

In the letter, Mohammed explained that his decision came after deep personal reflection and a sense of fulfilment, especially as he recently turned 80. He stated that he felt it was the right time to step back, rest, and allow younger leaders to take charge of the country’s political affairs. He also noted that he had served the nation in several roles and was satisfied with the contributions he made while in office.

Mohammed played many roles in government and within the PDP during its years in power. He served as Minister of Communications from 1999 to 2001, Acting National Chairman of the PDP in 2011, Minister of Defence from 2011 to 2012, and Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees in 2015. Beyond party positions, he was involved in public administration, security reforms, and internal restructuring within the Fourth Republic.

While looking back on his political journey, he explained that he had seen Nigeria go through difficult moments and better days, and he was grateful for the chance to serve. He also expressed gratitude to party members, supporters, and associates who had worked with him through the years.
Although he is retiring from partisan politics, Mohammed stated that he would remain available whenever the country needs his advice or experience. He noted that he still plans to support efforts aimed at unity and good governance.
His exit is expected to affect the PDP in Kebbi State, where he has been a well-known leader, adviser, and mobiliser for many years. His departure comes at a time when the PDP is trying to rebuild its influence and prepare for the 2027 general elections.
