The Independent National Electoral Commission has rejected a letter spreading on social media that claimed the commission issued a directive about a meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Working Committee and the postponement of the Ekiti State congress and governorship primary. The commission said the letter did not come from its offices and was not approved by any authorised official.

INEC explained that the document, dated November 10, 2025, was wrongly linked to the office of the Secretary of the Commission. After checking, the commission found that the signature used in the document was forged. It described the document as fake and warned the public, political parties, and the media to ignore it completely.

The electoral body said the circulation of the false letter was a deliberate attempt to confuse Nigerians and create disorder in the electoral process. It also warned that those involved in creating and sharing such documents were committing serious offences under the law.

INEC announced that it had started working with security agencies to track down those responsible for the forgery and ensure they are brought to justice.
The issue started after a real letter was sent earlier in November by PDP officials Abdulrahman Muhammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, before their expulsion. In that letter, they had informed INEC about the postponement of the PDP Ekiti State congress and governorship primary that was meant to hold on November 8, 2025, citing logistical problems.
INEC later responded to that earlier letter and rejected it, stating that the notice did not meet legal requirements because it was not jointly signed by the party’s National Chairman and National Secretary as demanded by the Electoral Act. The commission made it clear that any valid notice of party conventions or primaries must follow proper procedures.
